Bon JournalLiving life like a movieWhen my father first visited me in London, he observed that walking the streets of West Hampstead was like being in a movie. After all, the streets of London have been filmed numerous times and the scenes are familiar to many. Living in Europe is like living in a movie filmed in Europe. The buildings are old and full of interesting stories. The streets are not paved with gold but cobblestones or ancient bricks. While the exteriors of houses look old, the interiors are renovated and insulated. Being in a foreign country intensifies the experience. As a naive foreigner, I can't readily access the culture unless I know the language. Similar to watching movies, I only get to taste the experience but not fully digest it. At the moment, I am in a curious transition -- relying much of my reality of who I am by wire --- a cyberspace existence, where I can still communicate in the English language. Outside of it, I speak very little of this foreign tongue I've yet to master. Who knows? Maybe someday the Bon Journal will be made into a movie. For the time being, I am writing my own script and living life like a movie. 1 March 2004 Monday |
