January 2006Enjoy the ride My new year resolution is to make time and space to enjoy the ride. Last year, my resolution was never to say "I could have, I should have, I would have, and if only....." Here in the Netherlands, we ride bicycles everywhere we need to go. The land is flat --- conducive to cycling. What is the Steinway of folding bikes, or "vouwfiets" in Dutch? It's safe to stick with Steinway at whatever the cost because there's a liquid market for it used. In other words, you can always get some if not all of your money back. If your philosophy is to choose the best, you can't go wrong. But what about the second best? Or the lesser known? I like to give others a chance. For a decade or so, I've been fascinated by folding bikes. In the UK, Brompton's are a given. In the Netherlands, I see many different brands, of all shapes and sizes, not to mention the different folding mechanisms. Neobike, Giant Halfway, Dahon, Buzz Bike, Multicycle, ..... Brompton. When in doubt, choose the best. The one and only. You can't go wrong. Why do I resist? Why do I persist in digging reviews of folding bikes? Because it is an investment and I prefer to optimise and get my money's worth --- as well as ensure I can get rid of it should my preferences or circumstances change. Take it from someone who has bought and sold pianos. It's not so different. I'm looking for the lightest bike that folds easily. Brompton sued Neobike for copyright infringement of their folding mechanism. Nobody else folds like the way Brompton does. Are there other contenders? Why can't I find a used Brompton for sale?
